A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project covering 31,000 acres, with 13,250 acres of water surface, Harlan County is Nebraska's second largest lake. It is located in the south-central part of the state, seven miles from the Nebraska/Kansas state line. Considered some of the best fishing in Nebraska, Harlan County Lake is about nine miles long and has 75 miles of shoreline. The Corps maintains six established campgrounds, with the entire project open to public access. Truly a sportsman's paradise, Harlan County is also home to excellent pheasant, quail, dove, duck, goose and turkey hunting, along with the furbearers raccoon, coyote, and bobcat along with whitetail and mule deer hunting. During the winter months, hundreds of Bald Eagles stop over at the lake on their annual migration.
